The modern chemise is derived from the Roman tunic and first became popular in the Middle Ages. It was the only piece of lingerie that was regularly washed. Chemise comes from the French and means shirt. Today they are more delicate and are designed to be provocative. The term is also used to refer to a short, sleeveless dress. The chemise is similar to the babydoll which is more loose-fitting especially at the hips and usually resemble a youth nightgown with features only suitable for adult wear. The chemise of today is found in a variety of materials, usually delicate and sheer in nature. It is a fun piece of lingerie that should be a part of every woman’s wardrobe.
